OUR MISSION
Our foundation supports the Mary Thurston Memorial Scholarship, awarded each year to a senior student at Eastern Hancock High School (Charlottesville, IN). Post-secondary education changes lives, and we hope to inspire students to seek forward change in their own lives by providing funding for college or vocational training.
The scholarship was founded by David and Mary Thurston, and is inspired by David’s personal experience. David’s own life was changed when a high school coach took action to help him obtain financial assistance to attend the University of Louisville, paving the way for David to become a first-generation college student. The EHHS faculty awards the scholarship to students who may feel similarly impacted by a personal touch in their lives. After Mary’s passing, the scholarship was dedicated to her memory to honor her achievements in local education.
OUR STORY
The foundation is named for Mary Thurston who was a powerful force for change and inspiration in the Hancock County community, and was passionate about the importance of education. During her three daughters’ attendance at Eastern Hancock, Mary was a fierce supporter of the students, student organizations, and the school corporation as a whole. She served on the school board for several years and was a familiar face on campus to students, faculty, and staff alike. This foundation allows her legacy and passion for education to continue to impact the community she loved.
Incorporated in 2019, the Mary B. Thurston Educational Foundation is a non-profit, tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) corporation.
